![Daylight Saving Time Ends November 1: A Parking Lot Safety Checklist for Houston Businesses](https://www.thinkdsc.com/hubfs/Parking%20Lot%20at%20Night.png)

On Saturday, October 31, 2026, the sun sets in Houston at about 6:35 p.m. On Sunday, November 1, after the clocks fall back, it sets at about 5:34 p.m. By 6:00 p.m. it's dark.

Nothing about your building changes that weekend. What changes is who is outside in the dark. The employee who leaves at 5:30 walked to her car in daylight all summer. On Monday, November 2, she'll do it at dusk. The best thing you can do is walk your lot after dark before then, fix the lights, check the cameras, and give people a few simple options.

### When does it get dark in Houston after the time change?

After November 1, 2026, sunset in Houston lands around 5:30 p.m., and it's fully dark about 25 minutes later. It keeps getting earlier through November. The earliest sunset of the year comes in early December, at about 5:21 p.m.

That means a normal 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. departure moves from daylight into dusk or darkness overnight. It stays that way until clocks spring forward on March 14, 2027.

## Will this be the last time Texas changes its clocks?

Maybe, but not this year. Texas passed [House Bill 1393 in June 2025](https://www.fox7austin.com/news/gov-abbott-texas-time-congress) to stay on daylight saving time year-round, but it only takes effect if Congress allows it. The U.S. House [passed the Sunshine Protection Act on July 14, 2026](https://www.wsls.com/news/local/2026/07/14/house-votes-to-pass-sunshine-protection-act/), 308 to 117. The Senate hasn't voted. For now, clocks in Houston still fall back on November 1.

## Who walks to their car in the dark after November 1?

Almost every building has someone. Think about who leaves between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

- **Office towers and business parks.** Staff leaving at the end of the day, often alone, often to the far end of a surface lot or the top level of a garage.
- **Medical offices and clinics.** Front desk staff and evening shifts closing up after the last patient.
- **Schools.** Teachers, coaches and custodians leaving after practices, games and evening events.
- **Retail and restaurants.** Closers heading out with the day's deposit.
- **HOAs and apartment communities.** Residents walking dogs, using the pool or gym, or coming home from work.

Here is the catch. Most building walk-throughs happen at 10 a.m. A lot can look fine in daylight and still have dark corners, burnt-out fixtures and cameras that can't see much at 6 p.m.

## Will your parking lot lights adjust to the time change on their own?

Some will and some won't. It depends on what turns them on.

- **Photocells** turn lights on when it gets dark. They adjust on their own.
- **Astronomical timers** follow sunset by date and location. They usually adjust on their own too.
- **Simple timers** turn lights on at a set clock time. These often don't adjust. If one is set for 6:30 p.m., your lot could sit dark for almost an hour every evening.

Lights on a building automation system follow whatever schedule someone entered. It's worth asking who set it and when. Also look for fixtures that are out, dim or blocked by trees that grew over the summer. You'll only spot those at night.

## What happens to security cameras when it gets dark?

Most outdoor cameras switch from color to black-and-white infrared (IR) when the light drops. That's normal. But it changes what you can see.

- **Dusk is the hardest light.** For 20 to 30 minutes, it's too dark for good color and too bright for IR to kick in fully. Footage from this window is often the worst of the day, and it's exactly when people are leaving.
- **IR has a range.** Many cameras light up only 50 to 100 feet in front of them. Past that, the picture fades to gray.
- **Headlights wash out faces and plates.** A camera aimed toward a driveway may show little more than glare.
- **Color goes away.** In IR, a red car and a blue car can look the same. So can a jacket color, which is often the detail police ask for first.
- **Spider webs and bugs show up.** IR light reflects off them. Houston's long, humid summers make this worse, as we covered in [What Houston Summers Do to Your Outdoor Security Equipment](https://www.thinkdsc.com/blog/what-houston-summers-do-to-your-outdoor-security-equipment).

Newer cameras handle low light much better, and some can keep a color picture with a small amount of white light. DSC designs and installs [commercial video surveillance systems in Houston](https://www.thinkdsc.com/video-surveillance) for offices, schools, medical buildings and HOAs. Part of that work is choosing cameras for the lot at 6 p.m., not just at noon. Our [office camera buying guide](https://www.thinkdsc.com/blog/best-commercial-security-camera-system-for-a-small-to-mid-sized-houston-office) goes deeper on picking cameras that work at night.

## What actually makes people safer walking to their cars?

Cameras help after something happens. Lighting and people help before. That's an honest limit of video, and it's worth keeping in mind.

Research backs this up. A U.S. Department of Justice–funded [guide on parking facility crime](https://popcenter.asu.edu/content/thefts-and-cars-parking-facilities-page-3) found that poor lighting is a known risk factor. It also found that having attendants or staff present was one of the strongest ways to prevent theft. In other words, being seen matters.

The Houston Police Department's [personal safety tips](https://houstontx.gov/police/pdfs/personal_safety_tips.pdf) say the same thing in plain terms. Park in well-lit areas. Have your keys ready. Walk with other people when you can.

A few low-cost policies go a long way:

- **Let people move closer.** Open up spots near the door for evening staff from November to March.
- **Offer an escort.** If you have security staff or a guard, let people know they can ask for a walk out.
- **Leave together.** Encourage closers to walk out as a group.
- **Trim the landscaping.** Shrubs and low branches near walkways give people a place to hide.

If someone works alone late, it also helps to know someone would notice if they didn't make it to their car. Our September post on [AI cameras that can detect a person who has fallen](https://www.thinkdsc.com/blog/ai-enabled-security-cameras-detecting-falls-and-enhancing-workplace-safety) covers that after-hours gap.

## A 20-minute after-dark parking lot checklist

Pick an evening the week of November 2, 2026, and walk your lot at about 6:15 p.m. Bring a phone and take notes.

1. **Walk the route your staff walks.** Start at the door they use and go to the farthest space.
2. **Look for dark spots.** Note any fixtures that are out, dim or blocked by trees.
3. **Check how your lights turn on.** Photocell, astronomical timer, simple timer or building system? Fix any timer still on summer time.
4. **Pull up your cameras live.** Can you see a person clearly at the far end of the lot? Can you tell what they're wearing?
5. **Check the dusk window.** Review footage from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. That's the hardest light of the day.
6. **Look for glare.** Are headlights or bright fixtures blinding any camera?
7. **Clean the camera covers.** Remove webs and bugs that reflect IR light.
8. **Check the hiding spots.** Overgrown shrubs, dumpster corners, stairwells and garage landings.
9. **Ask your people.** Ask the folks who leave late where they feel least comfortable. They already know.

## Where to start

You don't need a new system to get ready for November 1. Most of the gains come from a night walk, a timer fix and a few cameras aimed or tuned for the dark.

If you'd like a second set of eyes, DSC can walk your Houston property after dark, check what your cameras can see, and tell you what's worth fixing. [Reach out to our team](https://www.thinkdsc.com/contact-us) and we'll set up a time.
